Best for Fun - Expert review of Budapest Zoo
Standing at the western side of City Park, Budapest Zoo is worth a visit as much for its Art-Nouveau architecture as its animals. The elephant house is quite remarkable, looking like a house of worship with its domed roof covered in turquoise Zsolnay tiles and its minaret-like viewing tower. The zoo has a good spread of species (among them the only gorillas in Hungary, including a baby born at the start of 2010), a palm house featuring tropical plants and a petting area where children can stroke the rabbits and goats. Next to the zoo is a permanent circus, and beside that an amusement park with a merry-go-round that dates to the early 1900s and a wooden rollercoaster.
Entrance 1,990 forints (adults), 1,390 forints (concessions).
