Best for Culture - Expert review of Museum Island
Envisioned by Friedrich Wilhelm IV as a "sanctuary of art and science", Museum Island comprises a multi-building complex between the Spree River and the Kupfergraben. The Pergamon Museum, which is actually a collection of three separate museums, encompasses classical antiquities, the Ancient Near East and Islamic art. The Neues Museum houses Egyptian, pre and early-history and classical antiquities. The Altes Museum was originally built to house all of Berlin’s art collections and now displays exhibits featuring artefacts of antiquity. The Bode Museum houses a sculpture collection and the Museum of Byzantine Art, in addition to works from the Old Masters and the Numismatic Collection.
Each museum operates as a separate entity with its own entrance fees and operating hours.
